Jeans were one of Helmut Lang's most popular transeasonal pieces and fashion critics have widely acknowledged that his innovative designs were catalytic in the transformation of denim garments to covetable, highly conceptual fashion items. When Prada purchased the label, the 'Helmut Lang Jeans' line was discontinued in a failed attempt to make the brand appear more upmarket. By the time this piece was designed, Lang's denim products were limited to runway pieces, and were thus even more idiosyncratic and evocative. Indeed, although they are marked 'Classic', there is nothing ordinary about these jeans. 

The fabric is a stiff and densely woven denim with a deep black overdyed finish. The cut is tight on the thighs, with an elegant rise and straight leg. The jeans' timeless shape is offset by S/S 2003's signature asymmetric applications, which adorn the left side of the waist and left leg. The stiff nature of the rubber tape gives these areas a deep black waxed appearance and a sculptural three-dimensional shape. This unique detailing is striking yet ambiguous and understated, in line with the highly conceptual and sophisticated approach of Lang's latest seasons. All-black hardware engraved with the Helmut Lang logo adds a severe edge, while complementing the jeans' sharp and modern aesthetic. The interior is flawlessly finished as to be expected, with flat fell seams that ensure the jeans will be worn for years without fraying. Overall, the jeans feel heavy and very sturdy. 

These handsome jeans combine Helmut Lang's cutting-edge aesthetic with a sleek and elegant classic cut. The heavy overdyed fabric will age wonderfully over time, while the unique rubber applications are an ample demonstration of Lang's idiosyncratic experimentation.
